Lauren Jenio
Intercultural English
I am writing my reflection paper in response to Archana Thapa's paper about animal testing. I chose to use this paper to reflect on because I have been around these kinds of laboratories and have seen protests about this in action. New Jersey house a fair amount of these research institutes as well as New York. There are times when the streets of New York are packed full of protesters complaining abut the conditions in the factories and the abuse done to the animals.

Animal testing can be taken in two completely opposite directions depending on how one is looking at the situation. It is considered inhumane because of the unnecessary abuse that is brought upon the innocent animals that are being used to test a variety of products. But, in the same kind of way it is considered incumbent to go through with the testing if it will eventually save a persons life. Animal testing is a very controversial issue, sure it is against nature to murder innocent organisms but it would be painfully ignorant to not use lower life beings to make sure that certain medicines would not have side effects in the long run.

My personal opinion in this matter is that animal testing is a good thing but only if completely necessary and if there is a low chance of the testee getting hurt in the process. I believe in one life to save a million and though that is not quite the statistics with animal testing it is the meaning of the phrase that counts. If scientists can research a product on a lab rat or a mouse or some other small creature and it perishes...I can honestly say that I am glad that the product was tested on that animal first before making its way into society and potentially killing hundreds before being pulled off the shelves.

Archana made a couple good points throughout her paper that I thought should be touched upon, starting with the meaningless experiments that could be detrimental toward the animals health. Using the example that she hit on, the juice industry subjecting creatures to awful environmental conditions and then forcing them to consume a certain type of juice to see if any effect occurs. This is not only useless but could potentially be deemed as animal cruelty if it was looked into deeper. If these people were to get investigated they would not have a good enough, well thought out reason for putting the animals through that kind of conditioning.

There are pros and cons to every argument though, it just depends on what side you choose to look at it from. On one hand without animal testing there would be less medicines in the world that have saved lives and done good things for people but on the other people must think about what this is doing to the animals. To make these so-called miracle drugs and wonder cures hundreds of innocent living organisms must pay with their health and sometimes even their lives. Like I stated earlier I believe that animals have rights too and should not have to undergo certain treatments that are only beneficial for those who are just curious... not because it could help save future lives.

When I went to research animal testing on the web I found out some interesting facts about how the scientists go through with their tests. Most animal testing is actually done to observe the safety of cosmetics and the safety of cleaning supplies. Only about ten percent of all animal testing is done to research medical issues.

This is completely unacceptable, to kill creatures for beauty reasons is so far out of line. If woman care that much about how they look that they are willing to put an animal though hell and pain for their favorite shade of lipstick than they have some serious issues they need to work out. With the use of cleaning supplies is even worse, the makeup at least isn't made to hurt anything so its effect on animals won't be too bad but cleaning supplies are made to scour and loosen up dirt particles to remove messes. This cannot feel good to anyone, it is pure chemical being used and being tested on animals. This means that scientists are either getting the chemicals on the animal to see the effects against bare skin or putting them in a closed off area so that they can breathe in the chemical to see the effects it has after being inhaled.

Sure, a majority of people wear make-up and use cleaning supplies and are not going to give that up to save a couple rodents but there are alternatives to testing these things on animals. As Archana said in her paper, scientists could use in-vitro methods to test most of the cosmetics and cleaning supplies effects on human tissue and if it would cause a problem.

It would actually be a lot cheaper in the long run, the only reason that we are not using this method and instead testing animals is because some scientists believe that in-vitro is not as effective as animal testing, that people can tell more from a living creature that they could from just living tissue. Sure there are certain things that would probably work a lot better if it was tested on a living organism but if it is not needed than it should not be done.

Even animal testing is not one hundred percent accurate, half the still-born children in the world were born that way because their mothers were given drugs that were what scientists deemed as safe because it did not harm its animal testee. These are some of the more extreme cases of mistakes within the drug world but these kinds of faults happen all the time ranging from a small rash to cases of death all because the drug worked well on the animal. This can be resolved but having scientists test these things on in-vitro human cells, that way they will know whether it will harm a human or not instead of having to take that chance that it might.

Not only would this new way of testing be better in the long run for human use but it would save a countless number of animals from being tortured and put through awful experiments to find these things out.

All that is really needed then is a couple loyal supporters that can peacefully figure out and solve this problem using reasoning and facts instead of threats and violence. We have the tools to make a change and yet we do not use them because that would involve some level of effort and most people believe that if it cannot be solved on the spot then it is a lost cause. A lost cause it is to potentially save the lives and health of millions of animals.

The Eye

Lauren Jenio

To find an object that means a lot to someone usually is not a difficult thing to do, everyone has at least one thing that they cherish. To find an object that one not only cherishes but also hides otherwise long lost memories, that is a different story. I had to delve down deep to recover the object that needed to be written about, it may not look like much to other's but that's just it. An object is just an object unless there are memories attached to it, then it becomes a treasure to the holder.

This treasure of mine is a stuffed “animal” eyeball. It's about as big around as a dinner plate, The iris is a green color and surrounding that it has little red threads that are made to look like veins. Since this eye is extremely old and has been through a lot the threads are slowly falling out, so it has kind of a frazzled look about it. At the moment it is sitting on my futon back in New Jersey under the care of my father and step-mother, eventually it will work it's way through the mail so it can join me here where I want it.

This eyeball has many memories behind it but they all start out with how it came into my possession in the first place. Believe it or not my father and I did not just walk into a toy store and purchase a stuffed eyeball, we won it at a claw machine while blowing wads of money at the boardwalk one day. It was a beautiful sunny day at Sandy Hook, you know one of those perfect days that one just feels the need to get out of the house and do something completely pointless. Our completely pointless idea was to make our way over to the beach and lounge around all day like a bunch of slugs. This worked out great for the both of us for a while until we started frying no matter how much sunscreen we applied. Picking up our blankets and other belongings we hiked them back to my father's Saturn. Not wanting to return home just yet we made our way down the boardwalk. Everything was just dandy until I spotted the arcade. All those flashing lights, loud random sounds, the squeals of children who just won a cheap toy after shelling about ten dollars of their parents money into one machine. There is really nothing better than the feeling of walking into an arcade with a pocket full of someone else's change. With the wind at my back the smell of sea salt wafting in and out of the room I stalked my way around trying to spot the perfect machine to spend my father's money on.

After about ten minutes and many miniature tantrums later I walked out dejected, robbed of my pride and former optimistic behavior. Crying, I was about six at the time, I ran into my father's arms and whined about all the other kids getting the toys and I got squat. My father then stood up and led me back into the cacophony of light and sound. I looked up at him, his face a mask of determination, I knew that a miracle was about to happen and my little heart leaped with anticipated joy.

He crammed five dollars into one of those change machines and walked over to the closest arcade box, I didn't even take in what was inside I was awestruck watching my father go to work. He inserted the change into the slot and focused his eyes on the perfect toy, the one with the best position for the claw to grab onto. He gripped the joystick, rotating, pulling, pushing, and sometimes taking his hand off to check the position from the side. The time on the machine was running out and if he did not press it soon then the machine would decide for him, within the last five seconds he breathed out and pushed down the button to lower the claw.

Slowly the claw was lowered and encased the toy, on its way back up the toy began to slip from its grasp until on of the legs of the claw got caught in a thread. It held on all the way to the drop box where it fell into the lower compartment so that the player could receive it. The machine went wild, banging and popping, screaming, “WINNER WINNER”. My father smiled down at me but I couldn't see anything, my eyes were filled with tears as I rammed myself into the prize box and snatched it out. This was the first time I ever held the eye and it was a beautiful moment. My dad reached down and picked me up, I tried to thank him but no words would come out, instead I strangled him in a hug. I rode on his shoulders all the way back to the car with the eye held high. He normally did not let me ride on his shoulders because he thought I was too big. I think he just wanted to get me out of the arcade as fast as he could so that he would still have some money left when we got home. That was perfectly fine with me though because I got what I wanted. Grasping onto my new stuffed eye we made it home with little to no speech, I think my father enjoyed that as well old people just don't like all the noises and lights in the arcade, they get headaches.

It was a long car ride home because I was trying to come up with a name for the eye. I named everything I owned back when I was a wee little tyke, my father thought that naming an eyeball was kind of pointless but it was tradition. Though the ride was a half hour long I still had come up with nothing, finally we decided that “The Eye” was enough. We arrived back at the house and I preceded to show off the Eye to anyone that happened to wander by, everyone thought it was amazing. Later that night after a vigorous shower to get the accumulated sand off I trudged off to bed, dragging the Eye with me. This is where the tradition started; I hopped into bed and waited for my dad to tuck me in like he did every night. When he came I was clutching the Eye, he looked at it for a moment and grabbed it, patting the top of my head with it he looked down and said, “I got my eye on you,”. I giggled gave him a hug and passed out, it had been a long day for me.

This nightly ritual became a regular thing and lasted through many years, it got to the point that I could not fall asleep until my father uttered those six words. It saw me through my parents divorce where a majority of my time was spent at my mother's house. My dad sent it with me so that I would know that he would always be there if I ever needed anything.

Many toys had come and gone over the years, most I lost interest in or broke. The Eye was one of those toys that never got too old though, not because it was just so much fun to play with, but because it had a deeper meaning to it. The Eye was not just some toy I received at Christmas or a birthday party, it was given to me out of pity and that means so much more.

Now, eleven years later, I want the Eye back in my possession. I do not need it, I doubt I will ever need it again for now I am on my own. I have started a new way of life where I don't need any kind of authority breathing down my neck or telling me what to do and when to do it. I want the eye because it houses memories from the good and bad times of my childhood and it is a symbol for my father's love. I want it because it stuck with me, I have to preserve it through the years because after all it is only a cheap carnival prize.

Should Abusive Parents Be Put in Jail? (Family violence)

Should Abusive Parents Be Put in Jail?

Violence in family is a familiar thing to most of the people on the earth. Family violence is present in all periods of time. Also it is familiar in modern society and communities that were living in the past. For a long time, family violence was not considered as a problem. Many people did not know that can be a problem. The reason for something like that was the standing opinion that all happenings in family are private things. That opinion made family violence not dangerous for society. Family is bio-psycho social community that is made of parents and their children. In families between each member, should rule a relationship that is balanced and harmonic. Reality is different – disagreement and violence are elemental characteristics of some families. In last decade it became characteristic of many families. Violence in family is an act that trespasses human law. Human law is the primary rule that should be available to every human being. Every trespassing of women’s, men’s or children’s rights, from the people that are in their family, is considered as breaking the law. Interaction between some members in the family is bad and that brings a lot of problems and disagreements, which infect other members of the family. Violence is every act against the wish of one person that threatens personal integrity. It can be mental, physical, sexual, or economic violence. Family violence is a reality. Abuse of the person that is part of our family, lives in our house, or is family related is a fact. The process of violence is very complex. It lasts for years and it happens suddenly. The chance of the person, that was the victim of violence in family to be a violator, is three times bigger than if that person was raised in a normal environment. The most often cause of family violence is jealousy, problem of dependency, wish for control and also bad economic status. Although in society the most present shape of violence is family violence, in society they do not talk too much about it. Family violence is a taboo topic that is covered with silence and shame. Violence in family can have different ways of abusing. According to the article “Nasilje u porodici, (Family violence),” published in 2009, by Blic online, it can be:

“Physical abuse is often the most easily spotted form of abuse. It may be any kind of hitting, shaking, burning, biting, beating, and other actions that cause physical injury or produce significant physical pain.

Sexual abuse is any type of sexual contact between an adult and anyone younger than 18; between a significantly older child and a younger child.

Emotional abuse, it can be difficult to pin down because there may not be physical signs. Emotional abuse happens when yelling and anger go too far or when parents constantly criticize, threaten, or dismiss kids or teens until their self-esteem and feelings of self-worth are damaged.

Neglect is probably the hardest type of abuse to define. Neglect occurs when a child or teen doesn't have adequate food, housing, clothes, medical care, or supervision. Emotional neglect happens when a parent doesn't provide enough emotional support or deliberately and consistently pays very little or no attention to a child. “

Family violence can affect anyone. It can happen in any kind of family. Sometimes parents abuse each other, which can be hard for a child to witness. “

All parents that are going over the line by abusing children should be put in jail. To be abusive to your own child or another child is a big crime. Children are small and they are not grown people. They are not aware of what they are doing. If they had a bad grade or fight with someone else, that is not excuse to be violent to your or another child. Also, if parent is drunk, drugged, stressed, or in any other bad condition, that is not excuse for violence. Children that are small are learning from their parents, and all bad things that happened to them they will not forget. Also that will make them even worse than their parents. When children grow up in an abusive family, there is a big opportunity for them to be more aggressive or to have the same aggressive nature as their parents. “Children have been involved in nearly 40 per cent of the 8400 family violence cases investigated by Tasmania Police. Since 2005, when the State Government introduced the Safe at Home program, 12,400 domestic violence incidents have been recorded,” according to Mark Worley.

Every day we can read in newspapers or hear from our neighbors that someone’s parents were abusive to their family. That fact became our everyday life and we need to fight against that, so that we can continue our life peacefully and normally. We do not need to tolerate someone’s violence like nothing happened. We do not need to accept that fact and pretend like everything is normal. Some day, some part of our family can be killed, or dangerously injured. All that can end with someone in hospital. The United States Constitution and European Union wrote rights for people’s freedom. Everyone who does not respect and breaks that law should be in prison. Family is place where you suppose to feel free, safe and happy and not scared and unhappy.

In newspapers every day you can find articles like this: Anger is born in family. Every fourth woman bears violence in family. Person that and that went to prison because of violence in family and tried to burn house. Especially in Serbia, where economy is on the lowest level ever, family violence is very present. People do not have money for normal life and that makes a lot of problems. All the time they do not have money to pay bills. That problem makes them very depressed and hopeless. The man of the house, especially, is giving himself to alcohol and drugs. After days and days of drinking and coming home drunk, they start to be abusive. They do not see the way out from crises and problems, so that makes them violent to their family. To find the way out from the problems and to be happy is only thing that they want to accomplish. Years of trying that and finding problems make them very frustrated and angry. Kids, wives, and the other members of the family that they live with, are paying a lot for this bad life. Late at night when a parent comes home drunk, some kid or other part of family like grandparents, are victims of their cruelty. Parents find any little thing to start a fight. Also, they think if they beat their family, that all problems would be gone. But they will not. They will still be there waiting to be solved in other ways. According to Aleksandar Ilic’s article "Oca posle svadje izbo nozem sest puta, (After fight, he killed his father with six stabs).” Published in 2009, “Predrag Ivanovic (32) on Monday evening, after verbal fight killed his father Vladeta Ivanovic (58).” That is only one example of hundreds that you can read about in a period of three months.

There are some people that will not agree with putting abusive parents in jail. Their opinion is that abusive parents should not be in jail. They think when people scream, do not want to buy something, or hit them but not hard, that it is not something that they should be punished for. That is true, but family violence is much more aggressive and brutal. They, most of the times, beat they children and other parts of family to the death. Most of the time brutal cruelty ends in death. Everybody can read every day in newspaper stories about murders. They find every day that the father or mother killed some member of their family.

Abusive parents should be put in jail. They are not abusive only one time, they are abusive all the time or from time to time. If one parent is violent once, he will be violent again. That is dangerous because that violence can end up in death. No one can be so guilty that you can kill him because of a thing that he or she has done. Every misunderstanding should be solved in conversation. If we have problems we should talk with the person that we think that is guilty for our problems. If abusive parents and violent people are not put in jail they will be able to kill or hurt someone. If some person is violent once and he or she does it again, he or she should have a very serious punishment for that. People should live free, safe and happy no matter what happens. They should not be worried about whether someone will hurt them if that person comes back home drunk.

Djordje Petrovic Karadjordje

The biography of Djordje Petrovic Karadjordje

Almost five hundred years Serbia was a property of the Ottoman Empire. The Serbian people were suffering. They could not have their own religion, they could not walk down the streets free, male children were taken away from their mothers, so that they could serve the Ottoman’s army and also, what is the hardest thing, they were supposed to accept a different culture and religion. That was the hardest period for the Serbian nation. They needed miracle and salvation. They needed one person who will lead them to freedom, and they found it in 1804. Far from the Ottoman eyes, small group of Serbian people gathered in Orasac to decide their leader. They needed someone to lead them against the Ottoman Empire, someone who will be extraordinary, a good strategist and commandant of the army. As a result they saw all those advantages in one person. That person was Djordje Petrovic Karadjordje. For this reason the most important battles were won thanks to Karadjordje and his decisiveness, bravery and good way of commanding.

Djordje Petrovic Karadjore is also known as Crni Djordje, which means Black Djordje. He got that nickname from the Ottoman people because he was the worst enemy to them. As well he established the dynasty of Karadjordjevic. His day of birth was November 14th 1762. Thus the name that he got that day is the name of Saint Djordje. Also he got that name to protect him from enemies and to lead him to happiness. Djordje Petrovic was born in poor family. His parents were Petar and Marica Zivkovic from Masloseva. Moreover, he had family that consisted of big number of members.

In autumn of 1785, he married Jelena Jovanovic from Masloseva. For a lot of reasons, he was force to run with his family into Srem, which is province of Serbia. They stayed there until the last Austrian-Ottoman war. Escape to Austria in 1813, and also in 1876, were the two hardest periods in Karadjordje’s life. He was living in Srem for two years, until he joined to the Austrian army in war against the Ottoman Empire (1788-1891). Also, he was volunteered in group of people who called themselves Mihaljevicev frajkor, and he was under command of Radica Petrovic. This group of people was battling for the Austrian Empire. It is hard to say when Karadjordje went from frajkorac to brigand. As a result, Austria gave him the medal for bravery and also noncommissioned officer medal. Main excellence of this war is that it has the enormous participation of people in it. The Experience and edification that they got were the treasure for them. For this reason, during that time he traveled the lands of the Austrian Empire, met a lot of new people and improved his skill of (making) war.

How ever, Karadjordje did not achieve his glory very fast. Some people say that it is because he was making wars in groups of already famous people like Laza Dobric and Stanoje Glavas. Alone, he deserved a medal called the Harambasa. The word Harambasa means general of the group of people who were making war against the Ottoman Empire, and his group gathered over a hundred people in it. Establishing autonomy in Belgrade made Karadjordje stop being brigand, and to arrange his property in Topola. In that time he achieved average property.
On the other hand, after death of Laza Dobric he became again brigand. Stanoje Glavas and he were two most famous persons in Serbia in that time. Also participation in many wars left marks to his personality. In fact, people who explore history about that time say that he was not burden to his people, actually he was good protection.

The long period of enslavement and suffering, especially in time of the Ottoman domination, brought fear into the blood and bones of the Serbian people. The Serbian people were suffering and they wanted freedom. Because of this, in that time they started to raise the rebellion and Karadjordje had the main part in it. The main revolution was in 1804, but in that time Karadjordje was not the most popular person and he did not do any national duty, he was only famous because of his bravery to oppose the Ottomans. Because he killed a couple of the Ottoman’s people he became very popular in Sumadija.

In Sumadija and Kolubara they were preparing the rebellion. Kolubara is a province next to Sumadija. Naturally, the Ottoman Sultan found out about the rebellion, and he made the attack on the Serbian’s famous people in that time. He organized the meeting. At that meeting every famous Serbian were invited to come. As well, he made that event look like a pride for those people who were invited. So, they came that day to the meeting place but, in last moment Karadjordje decided not to go. He was suspicious about it. As it turns out, all people who came to that event were murdered.

In contrast, almost all decade of fighting against the Ottoman Empire (1804-1813), Karadjordje was the primary character. His activity was the most notable in 1804, but totally different after 1804. He was committed to gathering, organizing and encouraging people who were losing their balance, but also he took a radical attitude against traitors. Burning houses of traitors and Ottoman’s people who were living on lands of Serbia was his way of showing that the rebellion started. “Any Serbian who does not go with us into revolution will be attacked and condemned like all other Ottomans,” Karadjordje commanded. Successes at the beginning were accomplished thanks to his attitude and support that he got from his brigand group of people who were fighting against Ottoman cruelty.

On the other hand, by choosing Karadjordje to be a leader, Serbians accomplished the first serious step in organization of the national government. When Serbians countries fell into the domination of the Ottoman Empire, Serbian government, dynasty and authority disappeared. Crown dignity, in any way, could only be bought back again with the country’s new birth. Meanwhile, the institution of Karadjordje and the national community were building at the same time. Also, the national community of rebels was approved by the Russians. In general, the Russians and Serbians were together fighting against the Ottoman Empire. Karadjordje, after little doubtfulness and wandering, broadened and anchored his domination on the territory that he liberated from the Ottoman Empire.

The Constitution act from 1808 and also the Constitution act from 1811 admitted and gave Karadjordje the heritage and he was announced for the president of coalition. With that announcement he has the army and citizen’s command.

However, his comprehension of loyal character and duty was simple and he was not good in politics. Karadjordje has a distinctive appearance with the Serbian people. Except for his showing of bravery, he was very decent. In the Novosadski newspapers, he wrote a long time ago: “Imagine just how brave Serviljans are sitting on Vracar, and me poor fellow is between them. Your Petrovic is born Serviljanac.” As a result, to foreign people, diplomats and consolers, he was showing unnecessary condescension that is characteristic of the Serbian nation. In relations with foreign countries, he did not manage very well.

For example, you can read the quote that describes him the best and see what kind of person he was: “With only one guy that was following him, with little meat, tough cheese, little bread and brandy, always more armed than anyone can notice, Karadjordje in 1803, with short and easy step, with the shortcut he circumvented Sumadija and parts all over and cross the river Morava. He established his knowledge about using mountains, woods and water for future fights against the Ottoman Empire. But, the main goal for him was to acquaint with every more respectable host and win him for national fight against the Ottoman Empire.”

Indeed, Karadjordje was a matchless general. He wanted to ensure the unity of government and substantive country. For this reason, Karadjordje came back to the Serbia in 1817. Karadjordje was murdered in same year on July 25th, by the order of Milos Obrenovic.
Black Djordje fed himself very simply like all people from Sumadija. He was emphatically tall with a strong body. Furthermore, he had clear look, thin voice and speechless mouth. Extremely mobile, he went through lands of Serbia with his horse or afoot, finding himself always in the right place at the right time. Making war was his passion. For this reason, he was general of the army. He did not have anyone who could take his place or could be compared with him.

Karadjordje built the new Serbia, but because of his ignorance in politics people from Serbia did not recognize that. With a heroic way he directed the course of Serbian history. In truth, without exaggeration, we can say that his actions were magnificent.
